Our Objective
Ireland needs a credible plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Our objective is to ensure all clean energy options are fairly considered.
What We’re Asking For
1. End the Exclusion
Stop excluding nuclear from studies of zero emissions pathways for Irish energy by 2050.
Currently, legislation prevents proper consideration of nuclear energy, which means:
- State bodies avoid research into nuclear options
- Policy decisions are made without full information
- Ireland’s options are artificially limited
2. Comprehensive Assessment
Assess all net zero pathways, including those with nuclear power.
A complete assessment should evaluate:
- Cost - Lifetime costs including reliability
- Speed - Timeline to achieve net zero
- Reliability - 24/7 availability regardless of weather
- Safety - Proven safety records
- Environmental impact - Full lifecycle emissions
- Technical feasibility - Proven at scale
3. Remove Legal Barriers
Stop passing laws against nuclear power stations in Ireland.
The current bans:
- Prevent scientific study
- Were never put to public vote
- Limit Ireland’s climate options
- Can be removed with a simple Dáil vote
Why This Matters
Ireland has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, but:
❌ Current plan lacks credibility - No clear pathway to achieve targets
❌ Arbitrary exclusions - Nuclear excluded for ideological, not scientific reasons
❌ Higher costs - Renewables-only approach may be more expensive
❌ Reliability risks - Weather-dependent sources need backup power
❌ Timeline pressure - We’re running out of time to meet commitments
Our Approach
We advocate for evidence-based policy making:
✅ Follow the science - Base decisions on peer-reviewed research
✅ Consider all options - Evaluate every proven clean energy technology
✅ Prioritize results - Focus on achieving net zero, not ideology
✅ Learn from others - Study successful transitions in other countries
✅ Be transparent - Share all analysis publicly
What Success Looks Like
Our objective is achieved when:
- Nuclear energy is included in government energy studies
- Fair comparisons are made between all technologies
- Policy decisions are based on evidence, not ideology
- Ireland has a credible plan to achieve net zero by 2050
- The public is fully informed about all options
International Precedent
Many countries include nuclear in their climate plans:
- France - 70% nuclear electricity, lowest carbon in Europe
- Sweden - Combination of nuclear and hydro achieves near-zero emissions
- Finland - Building new nuclear to phase out fossil fuels
- UK - Nuclear essential in net zero strategy
- Netherlands - Planning new nuclear plants
