Ireland has no credible plan for net zero emissions by 2050. We need to consider all proven clean energy options, including nuclear.
Ireland’s current plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 arbitrarily excludes nuclear energy - the world’s most reliable clean energy source.
Most countries achieving zero emissions use either hydro or nuclear energy alongside renewables. Ireland’s hydro potential is limited, making nuclear a logical option to consider.
The evidence is clear: Including nuclear energy makes it easier and cheaper to decarbonize, according to the IPCC, International Energy Agency, and UN Economic Commission for Europe.

Adding 18% nuclear to Ireland’s planned 80% renewables would:
✅ Eliminate fossil fuels from electricity faster
✅ Cost less than extending renewable-only plans
✅ Ensure grid stability with reliable baseload power
✅ Create thousands of jobs in high-tech sectors
✅ Achieve zero emissions by 2040 - a decade ahead of target
This is not about replacing renewables - it’s about complementing them with proven, reliable clean energy.
Stop excluding nuclear from studies of zero emissions pathways for Irish energy.
Current laws prevent proper research into nuclear options, limiting Ireland’s choices.
Conduct comprehensive assessment of all net zero pathways, including nuclear power.
Policy decisions should be based on evidence, not ideology.
Stop passing laws against nuclear power stations in Ireland.
These laws prevent scientific study and informed decision-making.
Nuclear energy isn’t just about power generation. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can provide:
This versatility makes nuclear a key enabler for decarbonizing multiple sectors simultaneously.

Ireland faces increasing electricity demand from data centers and electrification, while weather-dependent renewables need backup power.
Nuclear provides 24/7 reliable baseload electricity regardless of weather conditions.
The EU Taxonomy recognizes nuclear energy as a sustainable activity contributing to climate change mitigation.
32 European countries are actively using, building, or planning nuclear power.

18for0 is an Irish non-profit whose volunteers have extensive experience in energy and related fields. We are justifiably concerned about the credibility of Ireland’s climate action plans.
We advocate for evidence-based policy that considers all proven clean energy technologies - including nuclear - to ensure Ireland can achieve net zero emissions affordably and reliably.
Together, we can ensure Ireland considers all clean energy options for a sustainable future.
